Cooler Roofs, Cooler Buildings,
More Heat-Resilient Communities.

CoolRoofsBC is an independent, non-profit organization working to increase use of cool roofing across British Columbia as an important, cost-effective heat mitigation strategy.

As our climate becomes hotter, the roofs we install, replace and restore provide an opportunity to reduce solar heat absorption, improve building performance and help communities better prepare for increasing temperatures and more frequent extreme heat events.

CoolRoofsBC provides independent, evidence-based information to support more informed roofing decisions.

Why Cool Roofing Matters in BC

As BC experiences hotter summers and more frequent extreme heat, cool roofing offers an important opportunity to reduce solar heat absorption, keep buildings cooler and improve community heat resilience. Combined with rooftop solar, it can also help roofs serve two purposes: reducing heat gain and generating clean electricity.

Understanding Cool Roofing

Learn how cool roofing reflects more sunlight and absorbs less solar heat, helping keep buildings cooler. This passive technology can improve indoor comfort and reduce cooling demand. Cool roofing includes a range of materials and colours, with options suited to different buildings and roof types.

Cool Roof Options

Explore cool roofing opportunities for new construction and existing buildings. Options include reflective coatings to extend suitable roofs, higher-reflectance materials when replacing roofing, and combining cool roofs with rooftop solar. The appropriate choice depends on the roof’s condition, building needs and plans for future use.

Supporting Community Action

Increasing awareness and adoption of cool roofing will also require action at the community level. The CoolRoofsBC Ambassador Program is being developed to support locally led efforts by providing information, resources, communications materials and opportunities for communities to share experience and successful approaches.

CoolRoofsBC is also pursuing a number of planned initiatives, dependent on funding and partnerships, intended to expand the information, tools and resources available to communities across the Province.
